Reviewing a recorded lecture from start to finish can seem like a safe way to study. In practice, it is easy to spend an hour watching it again without finding out what you actually learned.

Review becomes more useful when you have to retrieve the information. Instead of pressing play again, turn the lecture into searchable text and ask questions about the content. The goal is not to produce a polished summary. It is to find gaps before an exam, assignment, or your next class.

Why watching again is not always reviewing

The first time through a lecture is usually an attempt to understand the subject. The second time, the feeling of familiarity can be misleading: recognizing an explanation does not mean you can reproduce it without help.

There is also a practical issue. A two-hour lecture may contain only ten minutes relevant to your current question. Without a transcript or search, you have to remember when the instructor explained that concept.

Active review replaces the question “Do I recognize this content?” with more demanding questions:
